Whether residential or commercial, every paving project follows a system. It is important to know what the paving process looks like so that you know if your paving company is treating you fairly. Let’s take a closer look at the “professional paving project checklist.”
What Does the Paving Process Look Like?
Individual steps vary from company to company. However, from beginning to end, the paving process should look a little something like this:
1. Prepping
Before paving can begin, the site must be evaluated for potential problems, threats, etc. and arranged accordingly.
2. Excavating
Part of the site prep includes excavating. Excavation is the process of demolishing and removing already-existing surfaces, such as gravel. Heavy machinery gets the site down to base form so that new material can be added later.
3. Grading
Grading is essentially a word for “shaping.” The area being paved must be properly leveled out and shaped so that upon project completion, water drains correctly.
4. Curbing
Curbing is simply the act of transitioning from the driveway or sidewalk into the sloped curb. Asphalt curbs can be compressed into their curved shape either by machine or by hand depending on the largeness of the project.
5. Painting
Painting is not always provided by your paving company, but it is part of the overall process. In the case of a road or parking lot, dividing lines need to be painted.
6. Sealing
Like painting, many paving companies leave the sealing to someone else. Sealing your asphalt provides an extra protective layer to your driveway or parking lot, preventing it from long-term damage from the elements and from chemicals.
